Note: SFTAH transferred this from old data base when site was updated, thus date and name lost, all dates 2006 & 2007 changed during changeover to odd dates.Hi there everyone. I am a new member. I have an autistic son of 15 and he is not sleeping well at them moment (He has had 10 hours sleep in 7 days). He was given sedatives from the doctor but they have been no help. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get him to sleep??Tubbs

      Hi Tubbs,

Whilst it goes against the ‘popular thinking’ of no tv’s/computers in bedrooms, our fifteen year old, high functioning, autistic son always sleeps with his tv on, by his bed. Whilst he has never slept particularly well we find it takes the emphasis away from lying down and waiting to sleep which we found caused him problems settling. With the tv on he watches and then falls asleep whilst watching, if he wakes he watches some more and then sleeps again.
I appreciate it may not be something you want to try but it works for us.
      Good Luck.
      Dave.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried that but he just gets hyper and keeps changing the channels!! Oh well I’ll just have to persevere with this phase that he is going through.

many children and adults with ASD have sleep issues, many have low melatonin levels melatonin is naturally produced within the pineal gland, a glandular organ nestled between the cerebral hemispheres, It tells our body its time to sleep, because levels are low in people with ASD our bodies do not get the message to sleep.melatonin medication can be prescribed in tablet or liquid form from your GP or bought on the internet. However if you decide the latter please seek medical advice before you do.http://autismandaspergersinthefamily.freeforums.org/post2947.html?hilit=melatonin#p2947
