What is the study about?
This is the first Europe-wide study to track how preschool children with and without autism, and related neurodevelopmental conditions, develop over time. Our first goal is to better understand variability in brain development in children from different backgrounds. We then want to investigate how these differences in brain development are related to a child’s social, emotional, behavioural and cognitive development. Our second goal is to use this information to better understand the impact of differences in brain development on the emergence of neurodevelopmental conditions, such as Autism. In particular, we aim to identify ‘prognostic biomarkers’ that may help parents and professionals to predict a child’s development.
Who can take part?
Children with autism between the ages of 3 to 4 years old. We are also looking for children between the ages of 2.5 to 4 without a diagnosis of autism to take part!
What does participation involve?
Two visits to Denmark Hill, London which would involve some tablet tasks, interactive games and an MRI brain scan. The scan will be done whilst your child is asleep in the evening. It’s all about your child being a little brain explorer! There will also be some online questionnaires for parents to complete at home.
Will I get reimbursed for my time?
We will cover all travel expenses and you will receive £50 gift voucher for each visit as compensation for your time and energy. Your child will also receive a gift for being a brain explorer!
We hope you enjoy our ‘PIP and the Brain Explorers’ video https://vimeo.com/298368553
