      Hi

I have a 9 year old son with autism, moderate learning difficulties anxiety issues. He has been using pecs since he was 5 years old. Look forward to chatting with parents here. Does anyone else’s child use pecs for communication.

Basic Makaton is not too tricky to learn. Our son (12) enjoys copying ‘signs’ and he also enjoys watching my two profoundly deaf brothers in law and their family signing. However, so far the ‘copying’ has not transfered to any independent usage. Whilst we were visiting a school recently we came across a child who was very ‘fluent’ in Makaton. A member of staff said she found it very useful but its limitations were that he could only communicate with other makaton ‘speakers’ (in that school, only her) My deaf relatives use SSE and BSL so we tend to use those signs. We work on the principle that any communication is well worth pursueing and our success with the ‘copying’ lead us to hope that at some point progression will follow. Best of luck and hope this helps. Carol.
