Note: SFTAH transferred this from old data base when site was updated, thus date and name lost, all dates 2006 & 2007 changed during changeover to odd dates.Hi, I am really interested in training to be a ABA therapist/tutor working with autistic children but am unsure exactly how to get into this. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or knows where i could attain this. I have a PGCE specialising in key stage 1 and a BSc Degree in Psychology and Biology. I worked as a supply teacher for a year and gained experience of working with children with autism. thanks Jane

Hi, I wish you well but after speaking to some other parents whom have gone through the mill with ABA I can only ask you to consider teaching from and SLD perpective- have alook at some anti ABA stuff (well hidden for now!!!) – just so you can really see the full picture before tyou get into it ie look at what autistic peope say about it, Michelle Dawson etc check ‘autism exposed’ and
http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fgjQyy3iXCf/p-1.-1 – also
there’s a piece on bbc action and here http://www.freewebs.com/persphone/teachingautism.htm from a SLD teacher scared of ABA consultants etc . They do endorse IEP’s – but they implement the same way eg repetition and compliance in many guises and ‘in’ words- means the same. It doesn’t help autistic or sld children, it helps, maybe, behaviourally disturbed chidlren, there does seem to be confusion about this.CJ

Hi
There is always room for more than one opinion, I too have seen poor ABA practise and equaly poor SLD school provision, however, I have also experienced excellent provision and staff in both fields. My own son has had a long term programme of ABA at home with very professional staff including a student who joined us 5 years ago and has gone on to take her BCBA and is now employed supporting behavioural teaching in LEA schools. As a special needs teaching assistant I worked with a teacher for whom any external intervention was suspect and who consistently covered her own tracks when writing IEP’s, the teacher involved with my own child couldn’t be more proactive and professional, whatever view you want to find you will find research and ‘evidence’ to back it up, go and see for yourself, a website that may be of interest are http://www.treehouse.org.uk
