Hi Sarah. We have always found the best way to get results with any area of the curriculum is to start with our son’s primary interest and then slowly move the ‘goalposts’ to cover whichever area we want to teach. Our ‘high functioning’ son would have no interest in penguins (although our ‘low functioning’ son loves them!!!) and would see no relevence in a composition around them. However, Dr Who on the other hand…… Therefore a travel brochure about a planet featured in series 3, episode 4 would be much more interesting (to him) and would probably achieve the same objectives. If you get the chance, have a read of Temple Grandin’s books where she talks about how utilising cattle (her primary interest) helped her educationally. Hope this helps a little and best of luck with the home schooling. Dave.
