I have a gorgeous 9 year old boy who has only recently been diagnosed with Autism (along with many other things). From a very early age I had very strong feelings that he was 'special', and have spent years fighting and playing the waiting game for a diagnosis for him. I am now fighting for a Statement of Education so he can attend a 'Special Need' school. Without a Statement he cannot attend. Well more fighting on the way as it has been refused. At the moment I am Home Educating my darling son, but this is very hard with a total of 4 children in the household, one of which is under schooling age. He had been in mainstream school, but couldnt cope with the bullying from teachers/peers alike. Was always being sent out of class for distruptive behaviour, and has been excluded 3 times in a total of 20 months(due to complete lack of understanding of his diagnosis's). He got so down and unable to cope with it that he started threatning to run away, or hurt himself so he didnt have to attend school, so obviously that was it. I will not put him through anymore. He has been home since his last exclusion in January, and I will keep him home until he is able to join the 'special needs' school. He is still registered at the school, as I have been told if I derigister him, he will not stick out to the LEA. I find this quite disgusting that to get a 'special' child the correct education, you have to fight. Many thanks for reading this!!! Hello Clarisa, it sounds as if you have your hands full there.
Your story is one that is heard far too often still,I had to fight to the steps of the courts till the LEA changed its thinking.
Despite having a formal diagnosis, a huge pile of reports,letters and specialist advice all I got from them was “there is no evidence whatever that there is anything wrong with your child”…….. strange how the exact same eveidence suddenly produced his statement and an agreed placement once the National Autistic Society advisors and a solicitor were involved,every single thing they had said was suddenly reversed.
Have you spoken with an education advisor from the NAS? They really do make a huge difference and they know all the legal requirements and will help with statements etc.They may even help with tribunals too.
Keep plugging away at them,you will win through in the end.

I’ve just read both of your posts and to be honest am in tears… I have a similar problem and to read that others are going through the same is strangely comforting..
My beautiful 10yr old son doesn’t have behavourial problems but does display many traits of mild autism but because he sits quietly in class and doesn’t cause any disruptions, I feel he is being pushed to the back of the “queue”. We had an assessment this time last year and I was told by his Dr that he had ASD, unfortunately before he wrote up his official report, he left!! It took another 8 months to get a replacement for him and another 3 for us to get an appt!! at which point the replacement Dr has said that my son “just” has learning difficulties!! I am lost!! I’m now looking into a private assessment because I feel so let down.. I have his IEP at school this afternoon and am trying to contain my emotions so as not to break down in there!!! Why is it so difficult to get help for our “special” children??? thanks for reading x -
