in reply to: Aggression and restraining #5475We have asked local services to help with any techniques that we could use to defend ourselves and try and keep my other children safe but they are reluctant to help - probably afreaid of being sued. Surely special needs teachers, paramedics, police must know of techniques we can use to restrain my boy safely without harming him.

in reply to: Homes for adults #5658I've recently been looking at local homes supporting adults with a wide spectrum of learning disabilities and have been shocked at the lack of one on one care and activities these homes offer. Also seeing how much the privately run homes charge per week to care for these young adults and how much they pay their staff I found it all quite depressing to say the least.
I agree completely.
in reply to: Patient tied up #5655Yes Report to police and the inspectorate.Your description of events does seem rather primitive and could be construed as abusive. There is a big difference between ‘protective devices’ (padding, arm splints, helmets etc.) and restraint physical or otherwise, which ‘may’ be contravening Human Rights issues. In all respects a detailed care plan should be in place and all staff aware of procedure. Careful monitoring is essential. Risk assessments should already have been taken and guidance with Health Authority representatives, patient’s carers or guardians and all parties involved agreeing to the safest management of such behaviours that serves the best interests of the patient. Not least, an assessment to try to understand the Why? Of such behaviours causes etc. and any interventions that can be used or tried to prevent SIB or escalation of. Restraint is used as a last resort and for the minimum time.
